![]() The Very Revd Chris Dalliston - The Dean of Newcastle The Very Revd Chris Dalliston has been the Dean of Newcastle since July 2003. He is responsible for leading the life and work of the Cathedral, for ensuring that it is both maintained and developed, and that its mission within the diocese and to the wider community is understood and promoted. The Dean chairs the Chapter – the Cathedral’s governing body. As Vicar of Newcastle, the Dean also plays a part in many aspects of the life of the City, and as a member of the Bishop’s Senior Staff he is a member or chair of a number of Diocesan Task Groups and Committees. ![]() The Revd Canon Peter Strange - The Canon Precentor The Canon Precentor is responsible for the ordering of the liturgy. He works closely with the Master of the Music and has a particular relationship with the members of the choir and the servers. As chair of the Outreach Group he has a special concern for the promotion of events in the life of the Cathedral and its community, and is especially involved with the various artistic and cultural events which take place here. Canon Strange is also the Actors’ Church Union chaplain to the Theatre Royal. ![]() The Revd Canon Robert Gage - Canon for Education and Learning The Revd Canon Robert Gage came to St. Nicholas Cathedral in November 2005 from Wakefield Cathedral where he was Precentor. Canon Gage is one of the two Church Commissioners’ Canons, and within the Cathedral his brief is to create and direct the education programme for adults and children, with a particular emphasis on the Theology and Spirituality of Childhood. As part of the Heart of the City Project, Canon Gage is also working with the City of Newcastle and the Society of Antiquaries towards our joint educational programme for this historic quarter of Newcastle. The Venerable Geoff Miller - The Archdeacon of Northumberland The Archdeacon of Northumberland has the responsibilities of a Residentiary Canon within the Cathedral. In the wider diocese he is responsible for the discipline of the clergy, the repair of buildings, the maintenance of records and the efficient operation of the diocesan administration. The Revd Canon Dave Elkington - Advisor for Local Evangelism Canon Elkington also has the responsibilities of a Residentiary Canon within the Cathedral. In the wider diocese he has responsibility for advising parishes on evangelism as part of the parish strategy, and the various resources which are available to help them. ![]() Scott Farrell - Organist and Master of the Music The Master of the Music is responsible for administering and training the choir of men and boys who sing five choral services each week during school term times. Scott also directs the Cathedral Consort, a SATB choir of young adults largely drawn from the Universities, and the Lantern Singers, an open-access choir for girls and boys from the age of 6, who meet in the Cathedral on Saturday mornings. He also organises an annual series of organ recitals and other concerts, in addition to his work with the University of Newcastle and as a soloist. Michael Dutton - Assistant Organist The Assistant Organist is heavily involved in the training of the Choir and plays the organ for most of the choral services. Mike combines his work at the Cathedral with the position of Head of Performing Arts at Whickham Comprehensive School in Gateshead, a school well known locally for its annual productions. Outside of the Cathedral and School, Mike is in much demand as an accompanist to various choirs, both large and small, instrumental groups and soloists. ![]() Elspeth Robertson - Cathedral Secretary The Cathedral Secretary works primarily for the Dean, and also provides secretarial services for the other clergy based here (Canon Strange and Canon Gage), in addition to editing the Cathedral Newsletter and compiling the regular service sheets. Elspeth is also secretary to a number of the Cathedral’s elected bodies, is one of the Cathedral’s first-aiders, and helps to look after the Choristers on Choir Tours. Julian Haynes - Cathedral Administrator The Cathedral Administrator is in charge of the Cathedral Accounts, is the Cathedral’s Human Resources Manager, and has oversight of the Cathedral’s trading activities. Julian also serves as Clerk to the Chapter, Cathedral Council and the other key bodies within the Cathedral. Ruth Edwards - Finance Administrator The Finance Administrator prepares the Cathedral’s accounts, runs the Cathedral payroll, is responsible for banking and book-keeping matters, and provides the financial management information required by the Chapter and the Cathedral Administrator for the running of the Cathedral. Ruth also liaises with HM Revenue & Customs and other statutory bodies regarding the Cathedral’s finances. ![]() James Adams The Head Verger ![]() Gordon Scott Second Verger ![]() Alan Walton Third Verger ![]() Paul Wait Vestry Assistant Together the vestry team are responsible for setting up for all services and special events. They are butlers and housekeepers, and maintain the Cathedral and its ancillary buildings. Security, health & safety, cleaning and the ordering of ceremonial are part of the vestry team’s remit. The vestry team also exercise a ministry of welcome, dealing with people with many and varying needs, not least looking after those who come into the cathedral in distress. Paul is also part of the Cathedral Refectory Team at lunchtimes. ![]() Margaret Robertson - Shop Manager The Gift Shop Manager and her team of volunteers are responsible for running the Cathedral Shop, located in the Hall, which is open each weekday from 10.00am to 2.30 pm.
![]() Irene Richardson - Refectory Manager Irene, Lynn and Paul, together with a team of voluntary helpers operate from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm Monday-Friday making and serving a range of sandwiches, home cooked meals and treats, available in the Cathedral Refectory in the Hall. |
