Welcome

The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of NewcastleWelcome to the website of St Nicholas Cathedral; the Mother Church of the Diocese of Newcastle which stretches from the Tyne to the Tweed.

For over 900 years St Nicholas has been the parish church of Newcastle but when in 1882 the new Diocese was founded it also became England’s most northerly cathedral.

History

One of England’s smaller cathedrals, we are nevertheless proud of our historic building which bears eloquent testimony to the part played by the church in the life of the people of Newcastle and the North East over many generations. Set at the heart of the North East’s dynamic regional capital, we seek to respond creatively to the opportunities this offers now and in the future.

Focus

Our ministry is focussed on four key areas: worship, welcome, learning and culture, and you will find something here about each of these areas of our work.

Dedication

Dedicated to St Nicholas, patron saint of children, we have a special concern for the place of childhood in our society and this plays a particularly important part in our developing educational programme.

Values

Underpinning all we do are our values. We aspire to be a place of Discovery, Celebration and Challenge: characteristics that, we believe, reflect both the Christian faith we are called to proclaim and the teaching of Jesus Christ whom we seek to serve and follow here.

Community

Every year we play host to a huge range of services, events and activities as well as simply “being here” as a place of stillness, reflection and spiritual refreshment at the heart of the city. Whatever your interest, enjoy your virtual visit and be assured of a very warm North Eastern welcome from the cathedral community.
